New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you become ravenous," said one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
